After establishing a photo blog on Birding In Maine, which chronicles our birding adventures in Maine and beyond, I decided to begin another site featuring my photography on the Birds Of Maine.

There will be no stories, trip reports or any of the other subject matter that you would see in a birding blog. This endeavor consists of photos of the birds that can be found in Maine, including rarities. Common and scientific names will accompany each photo along with several facts about the species. With rarities, location where the bird was photographed and the region where the bird is native to will be included.

I will accept photographs from Maine birders. Photos must be in .jpg format and be your own. I will not accept photos found on the Internet. For those submitting a photo, credit will appear under the photo. Please send your photo for consideration to birds (at) birdsofmaine (dot) com.

I am aways appreciative of your input. Comments and critique are welcomed and encouraged. At the end of every post, there is a link to “Comments”. Please let us know what you think.

John Briggs is a photographer and author who lives with his wife Sharon in Bath, Maine. John’s birding sites include Birding In Maine and the Maine Birders Network. His birding experience covers the span of 25 years.

I live a mile back in the woods in Somerset County and have discovered a wonderful bird I believe to be a woodcock. I see him mostly early in the morning or later at dusk. I am very excited as there does not seem to be much info on this bird in Maine. I will try to get a picture of the little guy and send it to your site. Respectfully Faye

    Hello Faye,

Thank you for stopping by. It would be great if you could get a photo of the bird. For more information on the Maine Woodcock, try this web site http://www.ruffedgrousemaine.com/woodcock.html
